saving styled text?

how do I save styled text from a field to a file so
that the text formatting is retained in the saved
file? 

I can save plain ascii just fine - I would like to
save its format as well however.

I have tried running through the help stacks and faq
and have not found a solution. Hints pointers or ideas
are appreciated!
